I carry two bricks around in a backpack. Preferably uphill. What the Ruck?
Yes, this is a thing. Rucking is walking with a weighted rucksack or backpack. This is a low impact exercise based on military training. www.goruck.com
I like to go for walks on my lunch break. This afternoon was surprisingly sunny and warm, so I grabbed my rucksack and went for a walk around town. I even went to the end of the pier to look at the harbor. I did a 2 mile loop and picked up lunch on the way back.
It felt great to be outside, the sun was warm, the leaves crunched underfoot; some red and yellow ones still clung to tree branches. The seasons pass.
What’s in the Bag, Anna?
I couldn’t find a brick so I got ½ paver and wrapped it in a towel to protect the backpack. The next week, I found a brick and added it. Total weight 15 lbs.
My cousin Mark passed recently; his music backpack is one of my keepsakes. It’s comfortable with many pockets. Mark was an amazing guitar player, one pocket held his picks, capos, and little things. I couldn’t part with them, so I carry them too. Mark died way too young and I know he would support my fitness journey.
What’s it all about?
Fitness and mental health.
Previously, I was eating my lunch at my desk and reading the news. This was very stressful for me. Getting outside literally gives me a different perspective. Try it, it may help you in stressful times.
Want to boost your mental health? Take a walk. 2 1/2 hours of exercise a week lowers risk of depression by 25%.
So find a reason. Find a backpack. Find a brick.
And ruck off!
